Wind Damage To Shingles

Roof Repair for our Barn?
First- our barn has the old ‘T’ style shingles. We had some wind damage done to the roof & have received a small settlement from our insurance company but not nearly enough to cover the $27,000+ estimate to re-shingle the roof. I won’t have enough money until next summer to get the roof re-done. My question is- what can we do in the meantime to help ‘patch’ the roof? Would tar work or just tarping it? I need something to get it through this summer & upcoming winter. We live in a high wind area & cold northern climate. I hate to let this barn go- it’s beautiful. Built in 1942 & we have the original blueprints. We knew it was going to need a roof but just not quite this soon after we bought it. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

go to home depot and get tar paper, it’s the stuff they place on exterior walls before they apply siding. This is also what roofers use under shingles, or they did way back when, this stuff works great, comes in large or small rolls, will get you through until you can have it repaired, check on cost of materials, t shaped shingles and tar paper while you are their, see if you can afford to purchase items yourself and see if you can find small local roofing company see how much they would charge to reshingle barn if you provided materials.
Asphalt shingles: nails and nail questions (part 2)
2nd Part
Read the first Part here
HOW MANY nails per shingle?
It depends on the number of tabs.
For example, use the normal three – rectangular tab shingles in USA / Canada require 4 nails: two top and two clips near the edges.
In Europe, most are four-tab asphalt shingles used and the number of nails needed 5/shingles.
More nails are needed:
– In windy regions
– If slopes are very steep, usually greater than 200%.
be used in this case, two nails above the recess. SO 6 nails are needed for the 3-tab shingles and 8 nails for the four-tab shingles.
WHAT ABOUT books?
Stapling is not recommended in Europe and as far as I know in the U.S. and Canada.
Notebooks can easily damaged shingles.
Where exactly THE PLACE nails?
In Europe, we put the nail a little above the sealing strip. The nails are placed 2-3cm above the upper point of the recess. The nails in the vicinity of the margins must be no closer than 2.5 cm from the are edges.
In no event shall the nails in the cracks and problematic points of the substrate are driven.
HAND nails or nail gun?
Hand nailing is more accurate. It is a better job, but it is slow and expensive. If you can not afford to use hand nailing for the entire project, at least:
– Near by The Rakes
– For the first course at the eaves
– For the ridge and hips
– For the valleys.
Because the hand nailing more precise, it is possible to reduce the wind uplift in these critical regions.
The nails should be operated vertically and flush with the upper side of the asphalt shingles secured in position.
If the nail is overloaded, it will harm the integrity of the asphalt shingles.
If the nails are driven under, they can not fix / Safety of asphalt shingles correctly.
In the event that the nails are not completely vertical, it will harm the shingles with their heads. These nails should be discarded and replaced.
CONCLUSION
Learn The proper techniques, nails, because they are crucial for the expected life and behavior of the shingles.
You pay to get the best to buy quality nails in the market.
