Hurricane Wind Damage
Hurricane Katrina DURING the storm Biloxi, Ms.

Which of these causes most damage – wind, rain or cold?

Flooding, without question. Just look at the damage from Hurricane Katrina or Cyclone Nargis.

EDIT: I was answering flooding in general, not just rain-caused flooding.

Disaster Insurance Adjuster

Disaster Insurance Adjuster
Disaster Insurance Adjuster

Public Insurance Adjusters Are Not Your Enemy

Working with a Public Adjuster can be good for your independent insurance agency and for your customers

1.         After a disaster, insureds have hundreds or even thousands of questions and worries. In a large-scale disaster, many of your local customers will be coming to YOU for answers.  You may find yourself answering the phone every few minutes to address more questions and to resolve their fears. As an agent you will find it necessary to  read the policy and then get back to the insured with their answers. You may find yourself at odds with the insurer if you add  your own opinion or  interpretation of the policy language and it differs from the insurer’s. This is an area where a public adjuster can add value since they will be the ones working directly with the insured and the insurer to address all coverage issues.

2.         Customers who have suffered a loss are very emotional and upset. You will likely be the first one to receive a call informing you of their loss. Your customer will be in need of some immediate assistance and resources. Some of the things they will need are emergency services and temporary housing. Customers will also ask you to report their claim for them and will inquire as to the entire process. It is likely they will ask for a copy of their policy with a full explanation of their coverages. This is an important process that can be handled by a public insurance adjuster.

3.         For the insured who  experiences a disaster, working with numerous company adjusters, independent adjusters and contractors can be cumbersome, time-consuming and sometimes may even be infuriating.  However, you as an independent agent want to stay neutral – you don’t want your customers yelling at you for decisions the insurer may be making and you certainly do not want your insurance company clients upset with you either. This can be a very challenging position to find yourself in. This is another reason why it makes sense to engage a public insurance adjuster – they are outside of the decision making process and will be an advocate for the insured.

4.         Our experience in adjusting large losses and large scale disasters has shown there are a large number of insureds that are under-insured. This is usually the result of the insured shopping for the lowest rates and ending up with inadequate coverage limits. If your insured finds themselves under-insured, the natural thing for them to do is to point their finger at their agent and accuse them of not properly insuring them. Sometimes, a very skilled and astute public adjuster can find additional coverage within the policy to minimize the impact. When selling a policy I recommend the agent spend additional time with the insured to fully explain the coverages that may quickly reach or exceed limits in case of a large loss – such as personal property with the sublimits; additional structures; landscaping; and building code upgrade to name a few. A good public adjuster will look for all coverages within the policy with a goal of minimizing the effect of an under-insured situation.

5.         During the entire claim process it is common for the insurer and insured to have differing opinions on a variety of issues. A professional public insurance adjuster will relieve the burden from the agent by answering and explaining coverages, processes, values and options available to them. In addition, the public adjuster will be able to obtain a value of the loss that is independent from the insurer’s. The goal of the public insurance adjuster is to pursue all coverage the insured is entitled to under the policy. Our experience has shown this is not always the same goal the insurer has. A professional public insurance adjuster can be a strong advocate for the insured and will work with the agent, insured and the insurer to resolve the claim expeditiously for its full value.

6.         Remember a professional public insurance adjuster is the only adjuster that can represent the insured. The company adjuster and independent adjuster are only authorized to work for the insurer. If the customer does not engage a public insurance adjuster, then they will find themselves without their own representation – or will rely upon their agent to perform that work and you will quickly discover you have a second full-time job. It is an arduous and tenacious task to juggle all elements of a claim and one that should really be performed by someone that does this on a full-time basis.

If you help your customer pick a claims professional who understands the insurance claims business, adheres to a Professional Code of Ethics and has an excellent reputation, you will have done a great service for them.

Guidelines for How to Pick the Right Public Adjuster:

- They should be licensed in the state the loss occurs in

- A member of the National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters (NAPIA)

- Experienced with a range of disasters and has worked with many insurance companies

- Local knowledge of contractors, repair and remediation prices, building codes, etc.

- Knowledge of your insurance company – its top adjusters and claims handling processes and policies

- References from satisfied customers

Why is it taking so long for me to get an answere from insurance?

Ok here I go again…. My suv was stolen on the 23rd of last month. I did’t have any idea till the cops came to me house early morning, when I went to go look at my car it was a disaster.I have full coverege and pay for rental, but yet my insurance wont give me a rental so tryed to get in hold of my adjuster witch it took me a week just to find out my car is a total loss. So now its bein another wk and my adjuster wont answere my calls left msgs but still no call back!!!! I need to know what are the next steps to take… I already filled out papperwork they sent me and retured it. what should I do next are they suppose to give me a rental?? how much longer is this going to take??? Help!!! My car note is due on monday, missed a couple of days from work tryed paying for my own rental but it was not working for me due to the beggining of the month witch all my payments are due!!!!

I suggest you contact a supervisor, and ask for a rental assuming that you do in fact have rental coverage as you suggested. Lose the attitude before you begin your conversation. Trust me, your claim will be sent right to the bottom of the proverbial pile.

Your insurance company appears to have horrible customer service. There is no excuse for how they are treating you, and it is not really the supervisor’s fault that the claims rep is not returning your call. I am sure that the supervisor may reprimand the claims rep.

If this does not work, contact your state’s insurance commissioner and file a complaint. You still need to make your car payment. You will not be compensated for time lost from work.

How Much Homeowners Insurance Coverage Do You Need?

If you are considering homeowners insurance, it should become obvious very quickly that you need to determine how much coverage you will need. This will require that you really examine your situation and learn what you can about every aspect of home insurance for your area that you can. There are some differences depending upon what region of the country you live. Let’s learn more about homeowner’s insurance.

Basically, you need to know what the approximate cost of replacing your home would be if something tragic like a fire or a natural disaster happened. This will help you to decide what amount of coverage is really appropriate. Then you will be able to make the best choice fits your needs. Some policies operate with certain amount limits so you may be able to find one that is within your home’s limits.

It may also be pertinent to obtain more coverage than you absolutely need rather than making your estimate exact or too close to the total value. This gives you some more flexibility in case any future problems prove to be more expensive than you first believed. You should not make too many assumptions about the likelihood of future events. They have a tendency to be proven wrong. Perhaps, the best example regards weather conditions. Where once it was rare to see a serious thunderstorm or tornado, one could pop up next week and do serious damage to your neighborhood or whole town. You just don’t know for sure.

If you have a homeowner’s insurance policy, you have a serious measure of protection that covered the destruction of the property as well as personal possessions. Most policies cover homes that have been damaged by windstorms, fire, hail, explosions, as well as theft and acts of vandalism. Moreover, if you are not able to live in your home due to any of these occurrences, your insurance policy will be able to supply financial assistance for the homeowner and other family members. This may also include temporary housing while repairs are made to the home.

Naturally, some losses are not covered by insurance policies. In some cases, the policies will only cover certain types. If there is no coverage, you may be able to obtain some sort of coverage through state-sponsors catastrophe funds called windpool programs.

Floods have their own separate insurance policies. You can obtain one from the National Flood Insurance Program, which was established by FEMA. Obviously, it covers damages to homes and property due to high water and flash floods. If you have any questions about whether you living in area that is considered a high flood risk zone, it should be a priority to find out what sort of coverage you might have.

A good piece advice for those who already have homeowner’s insurance policies is to periodically review the terms and make sure that they are updated to cover the latest changes in legislation regarding insurance coverage. Homeowners’ insurance coverage is a big deal. Your own is one of your most valuable assets. You should do what you can to protect it.

Wind Damage To Roofs

Wind Damage To Roofs
Wind Damage To Roofs
Roofs blown off in Gelephu windstorm
16 May, 2010 – On the night of May 12, Pema Dorji and his family were having dinner in their one-storey kitchen in Tarithang, Gelephu when a strong wind shook the bamboo hut and blew away the CGI roof.

How to locate a leak in your roof

Owning a house is a full time job! Sometimes it feels like if you don’t have one problem, than you have another! Having a leak in your roof is one of the most common household problems, but happily, just because there is a leak does not necessarily mean that you have a huge, expensive problem on your hands. Especially if you were able to identify the leak early, repairing your roof can be simple and cheap! But don’t put off doing it, because if you do, you may experience a variety of larger problems, such as mold, mildew, and even damaged foundations.
So first of all, try to find exactly where the roof is leaking.

If some of your ceiling tiles are wet, then you should be able to trace the leak backwards from the tile to the roof. Certain areas of your roof will be most prone to leaks. So if the location of the leak is not obvious, you will want to check the following areas first; low spots in the roof, areas around the chimney and skylights, areas where shingles are missing, and vent flashings from plumbing, the furnace, or wall steps.

Once you figure out exactly where the leak is, you should move things such as televisions and furniture that are underneath the leaky area to keep them from getting damaged. You may discover that a recent windstorm took some shingles off the roof. Winds gusting from 50 to 75 miles per hour can damage your roof. If this is the problem, all you have to do is replace the missing shingles.

Another common cause of leaking roofs is flashings that are not functioning correctly. Roof flashings are thigs that keep water out of areas of the roof where there are protrusions such as pipes and chimneys. If the junction between the flashings and the rest of the roof are not watertight, you can get leaks in the roof. Flashings can often cause leaks in the roof if they are not installed correctly, and flashings are the most susceptible part of your roof. Many early roof problems are actually just flashing problems. If you repair the flashings, it will usually fix any other problem you are having with a leaky roof.

Finally, if you cannot find the source of the problem yourself, you might want to consider hiring a roofing professional to keep your home from being subject to further water damage.
