Hail Roof Damage
can my insurance company drop me or raise my insurance for a hail damage claim?
there was a hail storm in our town on mar, 15 2008 my husband went up on the roof to repair some molding on the trim. when he got up there he saw A lot of hail damage to roof. we want to make a claim but are worry about our insurance being dropped or raised? someone told me that that cant do that unless they do the whole area. got in answers help
Your husband is wrong.
Insurance companies can only raise the premium on Life Insurance if they do the whole class.
Homeowners and Auto insurance premium is based on the individual risk. If your risk increases and your neighbors does not – then your rates can go up and your neighbors can stay the same.
So, yes, they can raise your insurance without raising insurance on everyone in town.
If you are not sure if you want to report the claim or not – call your agent and discuss the matter with him/her.

Repairing Roof Damage
After a storm has hit check your roof for debris, damage and look signs of leaks inside of your attic. If you have not kept up to date on your yearly roof inspections it is a good idea to have your roof inspected today. Storm damage can call for the replacement of broken or missing shingles as well as cause leaks in the roofing. Heavy winds can strip or break shingles. Hail can cause dents in the roof and your house siding and also leave debris laying on the roof. The first step is to clear all debris as it may be covering the damage and if left on the roof will cause damage over time.
Locating Roof Damage
If you do not feel comfortable walking on your roof please contact a professional. Tile roofs are especially difficult to walk upon and you may even break shingles while looking for possible damage. To begin brush the roof off with a broom, removing all sticks and debris. After the roof is clear you should be able to spot any missing, broken or damaged shingles. If there are no broken shingles skip the next step and look for possible leaks in your attic.
Replacing Shingles
Visit a roofing supplier and look for replacement shingles, tin snips, roofing cement, caulking gun, hammer and nails. Back on the roof remove the nails from both the damaged row and the row above. If you can not remove a nail try hammering it flush with to the roof. Use the tin snips to cut out the damaged shingles (you may also be able to slide the strip out). Before replacing the row with the new shingles fix any damages in the felt underlayment by applying the roofing cement with a caulking gun (putty knife will also work). If you did hammer any of the nails flush with the roof cover those with roofing cement as well. Install the new shingles and nail into the roof. Finally apply the roofing cement to the top of each nail. Shingles are manufactured with a roofing cement strip that will heat up in the sun and bond the shingles together.
Patching a Metal Roof
Metal is a great material for both residential and commercial roofing because it has a very high durability and long lifespan. In heavy storms metal roofing can become damaged although they do provide protection against hail and wind, large debris could damage your roof. To repair a metal roof we must first identify the type of metal that the roof is made of. A few common types of metal roofing are : corrugated galvanized steel, metal tile sheets, aluminum, copper and stainless steel. After identification we must pinpoint the problem area and clean it. To install new metal we must cut a patch that is larger, about 2-3 inches, than the damaged area. Outline the area with butyl tape on the roof and place the sanded patch over this tape. Screw into place the metal patch and then apply a roof coating.
